For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
– John 3:16-18 NIV
I’ve always believed in God and heaven. When my grandmother died, I believed she went to heaven to be with God and that she was in a better place. Unfortunately, the grief that came with missing her hardened my heart and made me angry at God for “taking” her from me.
I allowed the anger grow into resentment, and bitterness towards God consumed my life. I wandered far from God, deep into the darkness of this world. I was so lost, wandering blindly in whatever direction the current authority in my life directed me move. I had no idea what I was pursuing let alone why I was pursuing it other than “it was what I was supposed to do.”
My work was unhealthy, my relationships were unhealthy, my choices were unhealthy. I was dying a slow and agonizing death that led to a mere existence void of life. The only connection I had to life was the breath in my lungs and the beating of my heart.
Then Jesus opened my eyes to see His open arms. I wasn’t looking for Jesus but He was looking after me. I didn’t know I needed Him but He knew He wanted to save me. I didn’t deserve what He gave me but He has already given “it” to me. I was broken and ashamed and Jesus wanted to heal me.
Jesus didn’t heal me all at once, that would’ve been too overwhelming. Jesus knew all the pain I had subjected myself to, all the wounds I had self-inflicted, and He gently healed those wounds one by one. Every wound He healed, is healing, and will heal is a gift to me. While my journey of healing is, for me, in process, Jesus has already healed me. He’s already healed ALL of us, we just have to accept that “it” is already done.
He did “it” with one act – giving His life so that we may have life. He healed all my wounds, ALL our wounds, before we were even wounded. He healed us BEFORE we even knew we needed healing. He knew we were going to inflict pain and suffering on ourselves and others yet He didn’t come to condemn us, He came to SAVE us. He heals our self-inflicted wounds one at a time, teaching us to release condemnation and receive His abundant love.
The only thing holding us back from receiving the gift He has already given us is ourselves. We’re the ones that think we need “fix it” but He doesn’t expect us to do anything except BELIEVE. Do you understand this? You DON’T need to DO anything. All you need is to BELIEVE and let the Truth that Jesus loves you enter your mind. That’s it. It’s that simple.
Simply BELIEVING in Jesus is the first step in beginning a relationship with Him. Believing is the first step to healing. You don’t have to stay in the darkness. You don’t have to stay in prison. You can step into the light. You can experience freedom. Jesus is waiting for YOU. I encourage you to make the choice to believe in Him and ask Him to open your eyes. You will be amazed at the first seeds of love that He sows in your heart.
Just as all relationships take time to grow, so will it take time for you to grow in relationship with Jesus. You will recognize the presence of the seeds He sows in your heart and you will need to make room so His seeds can take root. Making room is a humbling and sometimes painful process of releasing what opposes His seeds of Truth, but the ”spring cleaning” of your heart will offer such refreshment, you’ll be glad you did the work.
I encourage you to take the first step and choose to believe in Jesus today. If you’re still wrestling with this choice even after reading this, I encourage you to reach out so I can help you sort out your thoughts in a safe place. Be encouraged! Do not be afraid or overwhelmed, Jesus knows where you are and what you need. He will not leave you or forsake you. Simply turn your eyes to Him and He will guide you in the way you should go.
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said:
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
